Kovalam (also known as the paradise of south ) is a globally renowned beach town by the Arabian Sea in Thiruvananthapuram city, Kerala, India, and its located around 16 km from the city center. Etymologically Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees. Kovalam has been the favorite spot of European tourists even before India became an independent country. Kovalam has three beaches separated by massive rocky promontory in its 17 km coastline, the three together form the glorious crescent of the Kovalam beach
It was G.V Raja (Prince of Travancore) who found the tourist potentiality in Kovalam and decided to promote. Later when Kerala government thought of making tourism as a major industry/brand, towards 90s, Kovalam was the primary tourist destination to be highlighted and promoted.
With no doubt, beaches are the highlights of Kovalam. Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra together makes the wonderful Kovalam beach.
This is the southernmost beach, and its one of the frequently visited beach by tourists over the globe. Lighthouse beach got its name from the old 35 metre high Vizhinjam Lighthouse located on a rocky headland there. This lighthouse can be visited from 3PM to 5PM daily.
Eve beach / Hawah beach is centre where fishermen carry out their activities and set out for sea. Tourists can enjoy beautiful view of enchanting bay of blue waters from here. It was also known to be the first topless beach in India but banned now.
Samudra beach is the place where local fishermen do their trade, and a large foreland separates this part from southern Kovalam with a less tourist crowd while comparing to other areas.
You can go to ocean in ancient boats which are paddled by bamboo paddles and skilfully droved by experienced local fishermen. Best time for this activity is early morning, sunset cruises are cool too.
You can hire surfboards and bodyboards at a fair amount. But when its peak season, they may charge more. You may expect 0.5 – 2.5 metres of waves time to time.
Best time to visit Kovalam is during September – March and at summer mean temperature would be 26 degree celsius and at winter this would be 18 degree celsius.
